Am I doing this right?

One of the most common questions people ask when they start meditating is: am I doing this right? The mind won't go quiet, nothing much seems to happen, and the verdict arrives fast. This isn't for me.

The answer in this meditation course is plain: there's no right or wrong way, and no hard rules. A teacher admits that some sittings felt easy and lovely, and in others literally nothing happened. Meditation here isn't forcing the mind to concentrate, either; straining, the course warns, brings tension instead of rest. Its version is smaller: choose one thought, say 'calm', hold it, and let it turn into a feeling.

The practical advice is unglamorous. Five to ten minutes at the start and end of the day, or less to begin with. An ordinary chair, though not the bed. Eyes softly open, so the skill comes with you into the day. The hard part isn't the technique. It's patience on the days nothing happens.

What have you been expecting meditation to feel like, and where did that expectation come from?

One practice for today

Tonight, sit in an ordinary chair for five minutes with your eyes resting softly on the floor. Choose one word, such as calm, and keep coming back to it until it starts to feel like something. Don't grade how it went.

Make it daily — today’s jewel, with a practice fitted to your day.
