You can be in the room with someone and not really there — nodding while a back-channel of your mind runs the to-do list, the phone face-up, one ear on a notification that hasn't even come.
Partial attention is the most common gift we give the people closest to us, and the one they feel most. Children especially can tell the difference between being watched and being seen. So can everyone else.
Full attention is brief and costs almost nothing, and it's most of what people mean when they say they feel loved. Five real minutes beats an hour of half.
Today: give one person five minutes of complete attention — phone away, mind here, nothing else open. Just them.
Make it daily — today’s jewel, with a practice fitted to your day.
