All jewels

Shaped by who's watching

We adjust ourselves to be liked — a little softer here, a little more agreeable there, an opinion trimmed to fit the room. Most of it so automatic we don't notice we're doing it.

It comes from something decent: we want connection, and we fear losing it. But a version of you edited for approval isn't really known by anyone. They like the edit, not you — and some part of you always knows the difference.

Being liked for who you actually are is rarer and slower. It costs you the few who only wanted the edit. It's the only kind worth having.

Today: notice one moment you shape yourself for approval. Say the truer, slightly less convenient thing instead. See what holds.

One practice for today

Notice one moment today when you're editing yourself to be liked. Offer the truer, slightly less convenient version instead, and see what holds.
