Where your mind lives

Most of the time, your thinking is driven from one of two places. The world outside: news, messages, other people's moods. Or the world inside: old memories, replayed conversations, the stories that go round and round.

The course this comes from names a third place the mind can live. Beyond both, it describes a dimension of complete silence, a home of light: your original home, the course says, and where God is. In thought, it says, you can go there, rest a while, and come back to your day more like a guest in it than a captive of it. One of its teachers describes sitting there and feeling seen as you originally were, not as your list of mistakes. Self-respect starts to return, and with it the strength to be patient, to let go, to forgive.

The difficulty is that the first two worlds are loud and this one is quiet. It won't compete for your attention. You have to choose it, briefly and often.

Which world has been driving your thinking today, the one outside you or the one in your head?

One practice for today

Three times today, stop for one minute. Let the outside noise and the inner replay both go quiet, and picture yourself rising into still, limitless light. Rest there for a few breaths, then go back to what you were doing, a visitor rather than a captive.

Make it daily — today’s jewel, with a practice fitted to your day.
